"I don't know if I was destined to work in films. It sounds kind of sad to put it that way. Life, DNA, destiny, fortune... My sister Fiore doesn't work in films, she's a shoe designer. Was she destined to be that? Sometimes I wonder what would have happened to me if I was the daughter of two plumbers. Would I be one too?"

xXx aka Triple X
Asia doesn’t know how the 'xXx' producers found her, because in the years before she played in it, she concentrated on directing. So, she didn’t do many movies as an actress. She really concentrated on this dream that she had. "I wanted to be a director so I did my long feature and I didn't even have an agent. I used to have, but I said, ‘I don't want to work as an actress right now. I want to concentrate on this’. So, I had my office in Rome and a casting director in England who knew my work contacted my office and sent the script for this. I read it and I'd seen [Rob Cohen's] 'The Fast and the Furious', which I loved. It's another action movie that I love. And I thought, 'Wow, this is something that I feel I could do'. It's hard when I've been so spoiled by having success in Europe, going back into the testing. For my ego it's a big deal, but it was good in making me more humble. You never arrive anywhere. You always have to start again. So, I decided to go for it and I was kind of upset because it was the first time I left my daughter for a couple of days. My daughter was four months and I went up there, but I felt really wanted. It wasn't my idea of casting which is really cold, like go in, do your thing and then on to the next one. People wanted me to be good in this and I felt very immediate empathy towards Vin. And Rob was very sweet and he spent time talking with me the night before. He sent me flowers, so I felt loved".
It appealed to her that her character, Yelena, is both cerebral and physical. "When I read the script, I liked it and I've always liked action movies. I really love action movies and I thought this was a very powerful role, and the fact that my daughter is there gave me the strength to go and get it. I wasn't dying to be in anything. I don't feel it's right just for me to establish myself out here. I think this movie is very lucky because it's a special movie in that the character of the woman is really strong. I love action movies, but that's not always the case in action movies to have such a strong female lead".
Yelena is very mysterious and has a dark side, yet she is also a good person. "At the end we see that she is a hero. It's very rare to see women in action movies who are as strong as the guy. Yelena is doing her own thing and that is unusual. Unlike most Bond girls, Yelena is not just in the movie to look good on the mantlepiece. She doesn't get killed straight after she get her on-screen kiss with the hero". Asia likes characters that are not one dimensional.
'xXx' was also the way Asia used to get well-known in America, so she could fulfill her real goal: directing movies in the United States. Without such a big success, she couldn't have been able to finance her own movie.
