"Acting came naturally to me, but I don't think it's my biggest ambition. So many actors become vain, and self-obsessed, and uncreative - everything's about the money - and I don't want to end up like that."

Asia Argento pulls no punches - August 7th 2002Interviewed by Susan Wloszczyna Who's hot: Asia (pronounced ah-ZEE-ah) Argento, 26, the wild child of European cinema and daughter of horror maestro Dario Argento and actress Daria Nicolodi. Why now: As Yelena, consort to a Russian terrorist, Argento's sooty eyes and sexy sneer enliven Vin Diesel's macho antics in XXX, her first major U.S. release, opening Friday. The buzz: The tastiest Italian import since sliced lasagna. For Asia Argento, a lonely child of show business who was a published poet and a film actress by age 9, life has a way of being art. Take her gallery of comely tattoos (and see them at www.darkdreams.org/asia.html). ''They were quite spontaneous,'' she says in her smoky accent. ''I was very young (14 when she got the first while high on hashish in Amsterdam), so I was lucky that my brainless decision worked out.'' There's an eye on her left shoulder, serpents encircling a sun where the moon don't shine, a buxom angel rising from her crotch and ''Anna,'' a tribute to her late sister, on her right rib. Although Argento plays the Gen-X update of a 007 siren in XXX, she has never seen one of the suave spy's screen adventures. ''They are very sexist. My character is stronger, sometimes smarter.'' Her femme fatale not only saves Vin Diesel's gym-toned butt but also reminds him to take the safety off his gun. Her male ideal? Elvis. ''It was the first record I ever bought. Fever. I was so young, 5 or 6, but I understood what sexy meant.'' Her European movies tend to be dark and disturbing. Why did she climb aboard a box-office behemoth like XXX? ''I thought it was fun, and I love action movies. I didn't think 'What could this bring my career?' Of course, then I am seeing what it is bringing me.'' That includes a chance to open her feature-directing debut, the autobiographical Scarlet Diva, in New York on the same day as XXX. ''I wanted to make a movie that was an exorcism of many ugly things that I've seen.'' Argento is full of surprises. Ask her how she got back in shape so quickly after having 13-month-old Anna Lou (with Italian rocker Morgan), and she reveals she almost was a professional boxer. ''I was a boxer for many years, and I just got back into my routine. I started when I was 18. I broke my nose once and never got it fixed, but that is when I stopped matches and just did the training.'' Motherhood has centered her.
''She's a very happy child,'' she says. ''I thank God because I must be a pretty decent mother if she is happy.'' She and XXX director Rob Cohen have been linked, but there's no man at the moment. ''I'm in love with my daughter. I don't desire anything else now.''
