Transylvania

Release Date: October 4, 2006 (France)
Director: Tony Gatlif
Starring: Asia Argento, Amira Casar, Birol Ünel, Marco Castoldi

Plot Summary: Asia Argento plays Zingarina, a rebellious young woman who leaves for Transylvania to find the man she loves. When she finds him, at a big popular festival in Sighet, she finds out he doesn't love her anymore. Zingarina is accompanied by her friend, Maria (played by Amira Casar), her guardian angel. However, as Maria reminds her of her past, Zingarina parts with her and tries to start things allover again when she falls in love with Tchangalo (Birol Ünel, the winner of the European Prize for best actor for his role in "Gegen die Wand" / "Head On"), a mysterious character who has no home and no boundaries, and who speaks several languages with an accent.

Facts:
  • Shot on location in Sighisoara and Sighet.
  • "Transylvania" marked Tony Gatlif's return to Romania nine years after the shooting of his film "Gadjo Dilo" in Valachia.
  • "Transylvania" carries the print that all of the director's films have had to date - the reinvention of the self in a different culture.
  • Marco Castoldi aka Morgan went to visit Asia on the set for a few days and ended up playing the musician who left Zingarina.
  • After Asia told Tony Gatlif that she had done boxing for 10 years, he added a scene where we can see Zingarina boxing in the middle of a road.

    Asia on her character:
  • "I play the role of Zingarina! A gipsy girl. I am so looking forward to this project. It's the most interesting material that's been offered to me since New Rose Hotel."

    Asia on the experience:
  • "It's the first time that I finally love the idea of being an actress. After directing two films myself, I understood that actors were a pain. They always want to know everything. Tony doesn't say anything, he's right. Now, I'll try to be the actress I'd like to be as a director."

Tony Gatlif on the film and the cast:
  • "It's been a while since I wanted to make a film about a woman. A free woman, who loses everything, gets rid of her identity and reinvents herself. I usually make films with men, adventurers who don't fear anything, like Gérard Darmon or Romain Duris. This time, I found Asia Argento, who acts so vehemently that we don't even ask ourselves the gender question anymore (laughs). In Transylvania, she plays Zingarina, a pregnant woman who goes after her man in Romania. When she finds him, he doesn't want her anymore. This destroy and broken woman is accompanied by Marie, her guardian angel, her confident. Marie is fascinated with Zingarina, who will vampirize her a bit - let's not forget that we're in Dracula's country -, then leave her. Zingarina will meet another man, a nationless adventurer who speaks several languages and will reveal herself. It's Birol Ünel, the hero of Head-On, who plays this character. Transylvania is a love story and a road-movie. I wrote it for Asia, because she incarnates all my fantasies about this woman. I had lots of things to give her, to make her do, knowning that with her personality, her talent and her ardour, she'd go beyond all that. She isn't afraid of anything, she plunges in. At one moment, in the film, Birol asks her: 'Who are you to end up here?', and she answers 'Imagine anything you want, I've done it"'. This is Asia! Amira had twisted her ankle a few days before the shooting, so I added it to the role, this destabilized her character a bit more. She has a beautiful personality, a beautiful fever. Birol didn't speak English well, so he had more trouble working with my methods, but he ended up entering the mold, which isn't really one."
