"I hope I never lose the hunger to do something new, something that makes me grow - this is why I had to direct: I felt there was nothing else that I really wanted to accomplish through acting. And now, since I made my movie, I'm enjoying acting more. I've become a much more humble actress."

"Il Fantasma dell'Opera" - March 22nd 1998The actress in the third film with her father: the challenge of a period film Pertosa (Salerno) - "I was scared, I did not feel that I was up for the role", says Asia Argento. "And then in the beginning, Christine was unpleasant, a virgin and chaste little girl, some kind of little shithead posh girl, all withholding. Then, when the phantom seduces her, she lets herself go, becomes free, and, being with him in the basements, she becomes disgusting too, liking the spiders, the rats and all the things that displeased her before". According to Asia Argento, Christine is "the first romantic heroine that yields to feelings she doesn't know how to handle. Completeness with two lovers is found. One with Raoul, he is tender, friendly, also brotherly, and one with the phantom, that is sweeping, passionate but also uneven, in the sense that he is an adult, illuminated, he could also be her father. And since she does not know how to decide between the two, she leaves it to the phantom to decide for her". Though her co-stars, Julian Sands and Andrea Di Stefano have already appeared in period films, for Asia Argento, a role in period costume is unusual. "And it is a beautiful challenge, someone once wrote that I should not do roles in period costume. But it is not true that the costume does not have importance, it is important that I "feel" the character, and this, after the first days of filming, has happened. When we film I feel it arrive, like it had its own life. I had never felt such a feeling, perhaps because up till now there was always similarity in the girls who I have played, while Christine is very different from me". It is the third film Asia Argento has done with her father, "but it is the first time that I see my father so inspired and participative. He usually does not speak very much with the actors, but in the preparation of 'Il Fantasma dell'Opera' he spoke with us a lot, he asked me what I thought, how I saw Christine, we have discussed her. And during the previous shoots he knew what he wanted, he decided, now, instead, he consults, he feels us out, he explains. Perhaps it is sincere because this is the film that he's really dreamed about making". Daughter of art, actress since she was a child, Asia retains one curiosity, tender insecurity. "I tend to act badly if one says negative things to me. I don't like being so fragile, but my acting always depends on what people say to me", telling the problem of the first days of filming 'New Rose Hotel' with Abel Ferrara, in which I have acted recently in America. "Abel leaves the actors total freedom, in fact he expects it, he wants everyone to go about it as they wish. The first days I was very preoccupied, but when I came to understand the game, it was very amusing to me".
Thanks a lot to Maria for revising the English.
