The novel was attacked at the time of its publication on the charge of immorality. The book, which is in the public domain, is a passionate love triangle, set in the 18th century in Normandy (France), about a impoverished but charming aristocrat who seduces a young heiress. But his past, in the shape of a former older Spanish mistress of a "bewitching uglyness" whose husband once defeated him in a duel, comes back to haunt him. Asia on the film: "I play the mistress.
