"Acting came naturally to me, but I don't think it's my biggest ambition. So many actors become vain, and self-obsessed, and uncreative - everything's about the money - and I don't want to end up like that."

The xXx diva dives behind the camera - August 2004By Alan Jones
Taking time off playing a Courtney Love clone in Gus Van Sant's Seattle rock drama Last Days, Asia Argento hit Cannes with her latest directorial effort, The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things. Based on JT Leroy's novel about his psychologically bruising adolescence with his junkie hooker mother, the seamy road saga met blistering reviews and shock over her liberal attitude to child abuse. "What were people expecting?" shrugs the xXx girl and daughter of horror maestro Dario. "It's more dishonest to make a trailer trash movie boiled down to the cute angel kid and bad grown-ups. Dostoyevsky always wrote about society rejects, yet you never hated them. You always understood their grey-area motives. JT loves the movie. He was there, and is the only critic I'm taking notice of." It's her second directing gig after 2000's Scarlet Diva and could de viewed as that film's lowlife opposite. "Both films deal with facets of the human condition. So what?" she snarls. "I never saw anything in the book as depraved or sleazy. Whatever I do, if it's a life-enhancing experience and strips aways society's pretensions, then fine. My cast understood that. Peter Fonda wanted to be involved because he's part of an association that helps abused children. He knew the importance of the message and responded to its un-Disney treatment." But is her mainstream acting career at odds with such fiercely independent filmmaking? "I honestly have no idea. I might be optimistic but I believe I can indulge both passions and not suffer any fall-out personally or work-wise. I'll always be a rebel - my father can attest to that! Yet I can't see any value in living fast and dying young. Better to continue living fast and dying old!"
